TOPOFILIA

La serie de cuadros que aquí presento estaba inicialmente inspirada en mi relación con la tradicional casa payesa ibicenca; pero ese enfoque fue mutando, hasta transformarse en la narración gráfica de la historia topofilica de mi vida a través de las casas en las que he vivido en Ibiza, sean antiguas o no.
“Topofilia” significa un fuerte apego a un lugar, que a menudo se mezcla con el sentido de identidad cultural entre ciertas personas y el amor por ciertos aspectos de dicho lugar.
El relato de esta historia personal, empieza por la casa donde me crié, Can Pep Mateu, de Sant Jordi, la matriz desde la que parten todas las demás.
Opté por crear una serie de textos que revelan puntos importantes en mi vida, a través de los cuales, espero que se entienda mi manera de percibirla.
Los objetos simbólicos que aparecen entorno a cada una de estas casas, representan experiencias importantes que quedaron grabadas en mi memoria.
Can Barrinol es la única casa en la que no viví, pero sentí que se merecía un cuadro propio, por la enorme influencia que tuvo sobre mí, gracias a su dueño de origen báltico que fue algo así como mi abuelo.
La casa que me enamoró y la que más me impactó ya en edad adulta, fue Ca Na Blaia, en Forada. Los ocho años allí fueron un regalo, gracias a la generosidad de Uta de Moustier. He amado cada centímetro de ese lugar. El camino para llegar a ella, sus feixes, su bosque, los vecinos, las sólidas paredes que me han contado su pasado, el silencio, las visitas de los pájaros, las ginetas, el cambio de estaciones. Todo.
Después de esta experiencia, volver a vivir en Can Llugat, nuestra casa de barrio, tuvo su tiempo de adaptación y como no, su duelo. El cambio fue importante.
Ya en aquel momento, viendo que las casas payesas se habían convertido en un objeto de lujo, pasando a ser tesoros por los que se puja al mejor postor, (como en las casas de subastas de obras de arte), mi pareja y yo entendimos que ya no estaban a nuestro alcance.
Nos adaptamos a la nueva realidad, invirtiendo toda esa energía y cariño que le hubiéramos dado a una casa payesa, a Can Llugat, tratando de crear un pequeño oasis de tranquilidad entre el bullicio de un pueblo que crece a marchas forzadas.

The paintings I´ve created for this exhibition were initially inspired by the strong relationship I have to the old ibizan farmhouses; but that approach gradually changed into a visual diary of my life though the houses I´ve lived in, on Ibiza, whether new or old.
‘Topophilia’ means a strong attachment to a place, which is often mixed with a sense of cultural identity among certain people and a love for aspects of that place.
This personal story begins with the house I grew up in, Can Pep Mateu, in Sant Jordi, where this strong relationship germinated. I then chose to write a series of texts that reveal important aspects of my life, hoping that this way, one might better understand my creative process.
The symbolic objects that appear around each of these houses represent important experiences that remain etched in my memory.
The house of Can Barrinol is the only one I did not live in, but I felt it deserved its own painting because of the enormous influence it had on me, thanks to its owner, originally from Estonia, who was like a grandfather to me.
The house that I fell in love with and that had the greatest impact on me as an adult, was Ca Na Blaia, in Forada. The eight years I spent there were a gift, thanks to the generosity of Uta de Moustier. I loved every inch of that place. The road to get there, its terraced land, its woods, the neighbours, the solid walls that told me about its past, the silence, the visits from birds, genets, and the changing seasons. Everything.
After this experience, returning to live in Can Llugat, our suburban home, took some time to adjust to, and, of course, some mourning. The change was significant. At that time I realised that farmhouses had become luxury items or treasures that were auctioned off to the highest bidder, so my partner and I came to terms with the fact they were no longer within our reach.
We adapted to the new reality, investing all the energy and love we would have given to a farmhouse into Can Llugat, trying to create a small oasis of tranquillity amid the hustle and bustle of a town that is growing at a rapid pace.
